Losing a tooth can be very traumatic for lots of people, especially if that tooth sits at the front of the mouth. To continue keeping their self esteem in place, most patients will go to the dentist right away to find out what they can do about it. Dr. David Dennison, a Houston TX periodontist and oral surgeon, has lots of ways to deal with problems such as this, and all a person has to do is contact them and make the appointment to get it done, right away. There are 3 main ways to fix this situation, and each has advantages and disadvantages, so it will be up to the patient to determine what will work best for them. 1. Dental bridge- A bridge is a cost effective way to replace a tooth promptly, and get the patient back to normal activity right away. They are easy to wear, and can be put in by most any dentist. Bridges are steady, and look like a normal tooth. The disadvantage however, is that the adjacent teeth need to be shaved down to accommodate a bridge. This will compromise the wholeness of these teeth, and could lead to decay if not kept properly clean. 2. Resin bonded fixed partial dentures- These are replacement teeth that are affixed to the back side of the adjacent teeth. Made of metal and porcelain, they are permanent, and do not need to have the surrounding tooth enamel shaved. Like the bridge, it is permanent, but it can also be temporary. It uses very little material, so it does not feel bulky inside the patient’s mouth, and it functions very well. The downside is that these can become loose over time, and if seen closely, they do not have the totally natural look that a bridge has. 3. Removable partial denture- These are a very common alternative method that are known by many people. ‘Dentures’ are teeth made from impressions taken from the patient’s mouth. They fit over the gums and offer the most cost effective way to replace any number of teeth, and the time it takes to replace them is very fast. The greatest drawback is that they are awkward. They restrict the foods that can be eaten, and need to be exchanged periodically over time, and many people complain that they are hard to get used to. 4. Implant supported crown- Pittsburgh dental implants are fast becoming the favorite method of tooth replacement. A rod is ‘implanted’ into the jaw bone, to which a substitute tooth is attached to. This is the most complete, and natural looking way to exchange a missing tooth and it calls for almost no attention once placed in position. They can be costly, and inserting a post does require a form of surgery. Not everyone qualifies- but for those who do, implant replacement teeth is quickly becoming the first choice for many people who are looking to have 1 or more teeth replaced.
