One final caveat that you need to have as an online poker player is the ability to gamble. Sure, you could spend your time at the low levels, schooling fish all day, but are you getting better, or just staying pretty good? What you have to do to escalate to that higher level of play is to take the jump. You need to face players better than you, and you need to play at stakes higher than you’re used to in order to better yourself. If you don’t, you’ll remain stagnant at pretty good. And if that’s your cup of tea, then by all means do what you do. But I’d surmise that the majority of poker players out there have a similar attitude toward ambition to be “the best,” so there won’t be very many who wish to sit still in mediocrity.

Tip 9: Act Last

I’ve covered the idea of position many times in poker articles, but I’ve never seen it tied into life the way Caro does in his 12 tips. An online poker player of any caliber has a natural advantage when they are the last to act. Whether or not they realize it, they are either consciously or unconsciously reinventing their strategy of those that act before them. This is commonly known as positional advantage in poker online.

But Caro takes it a step further. He digs a little deeper and tells you to befriend those to your left on the table. The two to your direct left will always have positional advantage over you in the blinds and anytime you’re not on the button. If you develop some rapport with these people, then they’re less likely to “come after” you for your stack. Human nature is funny like that.

He says that the people on your “left” in life are also the people whom you want to befriend. For it is those people who can cause you the most trouble. Always befriend the person who can cause you the most damage. The old saying of keep your friends close, but your enemies closer, well it never rang truer than in Caro’s statements on this. It’s also a benefit if you get to “act” after these people in your life who have a direct impact on you. You get to see what they do, and how you can respond accordingly.

In poker, there are monster hands, and there are good hands. Players are always happy to look down to see faces or an Ace, but some of these hands should have a red flag to signal danger attached to them. Pocket Jacks is one such poker hand. There are three cards higher – Ace, King and Queen – and if any come out on the flop, those Jacks lose their strength. If there are multiple players vying for the pot, it’s a safe assumption one of them is holding a King or an Ace, beating your Jacks. When up against Ace King or Queen pre-flop, the Jacks are a slight favorite but just barely. If no big raise comes out ahead of you, go ahead and enter the pot. Just remember not to bet your Jacks like they are Aces. King Queen is another pocket poker online hand that looks great, but it is still dependent on the draw, and if an Ace comes out with no other cards for the straight, then KQ deflates. It’s a good hand to play in late position, but more vulnerable from an early seat, and if a big raise comes out from behind you, it’s best to let it go than depend on the luck of the draw. Ace King can also be problematic starter hand. It can provide the highest pair on the flop, but then, again, maybe not. It is a drawing hand and when the flop misses it and a bet comes out, it is risky to continue to make the draw. Ace Queen or Jack looks good, but again, it’s a drawing hand looking for a lucky flop. Before you play any of these hands, you must be mentally prepared to release them when the flop misses you and a big bet comes out.

As face the Ace continues to air, the episodes are getting a little better to watch. Apparently the contestants are supposed to come from online freeroll poker satellites. After being too afraid to call another all in with the best poker online hand, A-7, he eventually called later with the same hand, and won an all in against Ferguson’s K-5. He won $40,000 and went on to Ace #2, Phil Gordon for a chance to win $200,000. Nothing much notable happened in this match except for the amateur’s over-the-top aggression. He played way too aggressively with pocket kings heads up, getting Gordon to fold preflop instead of playing a post-flop pot. Still, he won a nice amount of chips there, hard to argue with. Later, he 4-bet Gordon holding bottom pair, forcing the pro to lay down 2nd pair. For whatever reason, he picked up on weakness and pounced, unafraid of the consequences: losing $200,000. Finally, however, he called Gordon’s all-in and had the best hand, but the short of the two stacks. Gordon outflopped Erlich, sending the amateur home with nothing. Again, it’s tough to watch these people get nothing for their efforts. It’s only a 3-tier game show, and the jump from $40,000 to $200,000 is a huge step to have no payout secured. Beating 3 professionals in a row in heads up matches is a daunting task. If it’s your day, sure, you could win $1,000,000. But most likely, you’re going to get fouled up somewhere. Even the NBC Heads Up matches are best 2/3. I still don’t think anyone is going to win the million. I’d be hard pressed not to take the 40K if I beat the first ace. Keeping in mind how much that would be after taxes though, I can see how contestants go for more.

In poker online, raising the bet is the way to get the other players to fold so you can win the pot or at least decrease the number of players you must go up against during later rounds of betting. If you have a good starter hand, it’s often smart to raise early, even before the flop.

Raising the bet early makes a bold statement that you have a strong hand. It helps to establish fear and caution in the other poker online players who call your raise. Betting and raising early is how you get information about another player’s hand. You have to assume that anyone who calls is also holding strong cards.

If you have a made hand, like a pair, putting out a continuation value bet or a raise after the flop may win you the pot, because you established a strong image pre-flop. Anyone who called and was on a draw that missed will probably fold at this point.

An early raise may also let you see free cards in the subsequent rounds and you’ll most likely be up against a small field or just heads-up because you put out an early raise. If the flop misses your hand, you can check. If your opponent checks, then you get to see a free card.

After making an early raise, you must base your post-flop play based on the strength of your hand and what you think your online poker opponent might do based on what you have observed about the other players.

When faced with a borderline decision against a big bet on the river, a great question to ask yourself is, “What can I beat?” Say you have second pair with top kicker, and mostly the hand has been checked down by your opponent, who all of a sudden leads out on the river. Running through the range of online pokerhands that it might be possible for your opponent to hold, and then comparing that to what hands of those you can beat, can help narrow down those middle spots where often the call is a coinflip in the dark when playing poker online. Many times in this kind of poker situation you will be up against either a big hand that has been slowplayed, a big hand that has made it on the river, or a bluff. What card has come down that your opponent is now betting out on? Does it complete a big flush or straight draw? Did you protect your hand early on, and is your opponent the type that would pay to see those draws play out? Is he the type that would slowplay and then bet big on the river even if his hand is not the nuts? If you ask yourself, “What can I beat?” and find that the answer is “very little,” the decision comes down to whether you believe your opponent could bluff in his spot, or if you actually have a hand that couldn’t possibly win.
