BoTox is fast becoming popular amongst Sydney’s stylish set and now it has become an important part of grooming for those in Sydney. Nonetheless I am often startled by the various myths that surround this simple treatment. Below are a selection of the more popular stories which we hear everyday at Star Cosmetic Medicine, where I am employed as a physician.

Myth # 1: BoTox can freeze all my expressions!

There are sixty or so muscles below the skin of your face. The extensive use of these muscles over time may cause the formation of fine lines. If too much BoTox is employed the facial muscles can occasionally become over relaxed. In general physicians use relatively minute doses to are calculated to make you appear less tired, but still you will keep your facial expression.

By employing conservative amounts of the preparation in precisely the right spot an expressive face is kept whilst the lines are softened.

Myth # 2: Botulinum is a toxic substance!
This to a small extent is right. Its pharmaceutical term is Botulinum Toxin Type A. In large doses it can end up in a decrease in muscle tone and can even make one really sick.

Pharmacists have a well-known expression ‘everything is a poison – all depending on the dose’. A large dose of any medicinal drug will cause illness. If you drink too great a quantity of water you will die.

Myth # 3: BoTox injections hurt!
Your hairs are larger than the needles we use at Star Cosmetic Medicine. Some people compare the shots to mosquito bites. It is definitely less traumatic than a procedure like a blood profile.

Myth # 4: BoTox will numb the sensation in my face!
Not true. BoTox targets the neuromuscular junction, not the nerves of sensation. BoTox just impacts on the relaxation of muscular tissues.

Myth # 5. You need to keep getting BoTox or else you will develop even worse fine lines and wrinkles than ever!
This is also incorrect.

A treatment lasts around 3 months. Any further treatments after the initial one commonly last a few weeks longer. The wrinkles will gradually reappear as the muscle returns to normal. However they won’t be more pronounced than when you began your BoTox therapy.

Even should you do not have BoTox injections again – those lines will most likely be a little smoother than if you had never been treated. This, of course is chiefly the case because your skin has had a ‘wrinkle holiday’ for a few months.
